About Rhazes Lab

Rhazes Lab was founded in September 2022 at the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. Rhazes Lab is a multidisciplinary research group that conducts research in medical imaging, artificial intelligence, computer vision. Rhazes researchers are highly specialized in analysis of pathology and radiology images.

The lab was founded by Professor Hamid R. Tizhoosh, a renowned computer scientist and researcher, widely recognized for his contributions to the fields of artificial intelligence and medical image analysis. He is known for his expertise in medical image analysis, pattern recognition, and fuzzy logic, making significant strides in bridging the gap between advanced technology and practical applications in healthcare.

The research group has adopted the name “Rhazes” in honor of Zakariyya Razi (865-925 CE), a physician, philosopher and alchemist. Rhazes is one of the most influential physicians in the history of medicine with contributions.  Rhazes is credited with refining the distillation process, which was foundational for the development of modern chemistry. He used this technique to produce pure alcohol, which later became important in both medicine and alchemy. Rhazes authored several medical texts, the most notable being the “Kitab al-Hawi,” a comprehensive medical encyclopedia. This work encompassed knowledge from Greek, Persian, and Indian sources, consolidating medical wisdom of the time and influencing medical practices for centuries. Rhazes was among the earliest physicians to stress the importance of clinical observations and evidence-based medicine. Rhazes was a free-spirited thinker who questioned prevailing religious orthodoxy. His anti-religious thoughts and skepticism about established dogmas made him a controversial figure. His philosophical works, such as “Kitab al-Asrar” (The Book of Secrets) and “Kitab al-Zamurrud” (The Emerald Tablet), explored ethics, metaphysics, and the limits of human knowledge, often challenging religious beliefs.

Rhazes Lab takes the pioneering works of Rhazes in writing “medical encyclopedia” as its historic role model to design and develop a 21st century equivalent: The Mayo Atlas.
